Our Best Today for a Better Tomorrow
Vision
To provide equal service to all through compassion, empathy and respect while defending the rights of individuals and improving quality of life.
It is the intent of the Unified Police Department to build, strengthen and maintain strong character, integrity and ethics within our community. We will accomplish this goal through the sharing of knowledge, education and professional pride with the youth of our community.
The Mission
The mission of the Youth Cadet program is to create a positive relationship between the youth of our community and the law enforcement profession. By doing so, we will make Salt Lake County and the State of Utah a better place to live, work and play.
Who are we?
We are Explorer Post 2732 of Scouting’s Learning for Life Program. The Post is sponsored by the Salt Lake Honorary Colonels
The Youth Cadet-Explorer program consists of a multitude of instruction. The main goal of the Youth Cadet program is to introduce the members to the many different facets of the law enforcement profession while at the same time instilling a sense of pride and respect in themselves and the community. This will include career preparation, volunteer opportunities, interview skills, camping, service, and hands on learning.
The Unified Police Department gives 2.5 preference points for hiring to Cadet-Explorers who meet the requirements set forth in the Merit Commission Policy.
As with all these functions ethics and integrity is a must!
Who may apply?
Anyone between the age of 15 to 20 (MUST APPLY PRIOR TO 20th BIRTHDAY) within the area of Salt Lake County may apply to be accepted into the Youth Cadet program.
Requirements
The Unified Police Department is looking for students who have demonstrated good citizenship, have served as a positive role model or have shown the potential to become leaders within the youth community, and will follow the outlined goals and objectives of the Cadet-Explorer program along with maintaining an acceptable grade point average.
Meetings & Dress Attire
We meet weekly on Thursdays from 6:00-8:30. In addition to these meetings we have several events throughout the year. This program is a commitment as it requires 70% participation.
Cadets are issued uniforms and must dress appropriately. There will be some hands-on classes, which will involve interaction with other students, police officers and the community. The meetings and classes will be conducted in classroom settings, as well as in the field.
